While being a Religion major at Davidson College I took a semester long course on Karl Barth, a towering figure in 20th-century theology, best known for his complex and challenging work - Church Dogmatics (12 volumes with 10 point font!!)
His extensive writings and theology is rooted in the belief that God’s revelation is centered in Jesus Christ. To say the least, his writings were intricate and dense! I took another course on Barth in seminary. (Yes, a glutton for punishment!)
In 1962, Karl Barth from Switzerland, visited the United States for a series of lectures. During a Q&A session at Rockefeller Chapel on the campus of the University of Chicago, a student asked him if he could summarize his whole life's work in theology in a sentence.
Barth replied, "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
Wow!
Yes, it really is that simple…
Thank you Lord for Karl Barth and his dedication to his thorough writings of deep theology.
Thank you Lord for Anna Bartlett Warner who wrote the children’s hymn in 1860, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
What a beautiful intersection of Anna and Karl, the epitome of simplicity and complexity coming together one hundred and two years later and still holds true to this day, sixty-two years later in 2024!
Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong, they are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus love me… for the Bible tells me so.
(Thank you for singing along!!)
Amen and Amen!
Laugh often and Fear not!
David!
